F1 chief predicts Las Vegas Grand Prix will become 'the flagship race'

Formula One’s Grand Prix will become the sport’s ‘flagship race’ over the coming years, their chief has predicted.

F1 sealed the first £1billion deal in it’s history on Thursday when it confirmed a third race in the States will take place on the iconic Strip.

It will leave the US as the only country to host more than two races on the calendar, with Vegas joining the US Grand Prix in Austin and the Miami Grand Prix.

But president Stefano Domenicali expects it to become not just the dominant race in the States, but across the entire F1 calendar.

‘What happens in Las Vegas only happens in Las Vegas,’ he said in a press conference announcing the race, as per .

‘Nobody puts on a party like Las Vegas and I predict that this will be the iconic race, the flagship race, of F1 within a couple of years.

‘It’s emotion, it’s passion, it’s a business, it’s relationships, it’s culture and it’s intensity. And this is the reason why this is the perfect place to be.’

It will also take place at 10pm local time — scheduling that guarantees F1 mass projection, but means a 5am or 6am start for followers in the UK and Europe. It is a move Domenicali has defended.

‘Formula 1 cannot be static. To have a race on Saturday at 3pm, that would be a total mistake,’ he added.

‘That is the reason why we are flexible, we are showing that’s the right moment to have the best show in this context.

‘We do believe, without being arrogant, that Formula 1 will be something that the American fans will love to be involved even more.
